Dunragit Excavation Diary
Day 1: 7th August
12.00hrs The digs not of to great start - last night the heavens opened so every one tended to wake up somewhat wet around the edges - fortunetly my tent held up goverment surplus does have some uses.

After a slightly wet breakfast the team has headed of to the site. I will catch them up later and record some of the first days digging activities -(this should hopefully be posted on Monday).

Ps.The font for the text should be coming up as BrushScript BT it should appear hand written rather than typed if the font is not available a normal typeface should appear I would be interested to know if many readers see this font and how legible it is. e-mail me at 113142.1723@compuserve.com

An extensive area has now been opened up, Trench A is in the foreground whilst a smaller area to the east (trench B) has also been opened up. Before excavation can start the area has to be "shovel scraped", trowelled and cleaned with hand brushes so as to produce a clear and uniform work surface were the features can be seen clearly. The features will then be planned so their precise location is known and then finally we can start digging.

Today's Menu from the Kitchen

Julia Roberts
Breakfast was scrambled eggs, porridge, grilled tomatoes, toast and cereal. Lunch was the remains of the salads made for yesterdays dinner. Dinner tonight consisted of cheese and potato pie, peas and carrots, followed by apple crumble or apple brown betty, or a mixture of the two - slight miscalculation there - and ice-cream. Today's wonderful kitchen slaves were Dave, Louise and Lauren. The freezer isn't quite full but it's well on the way.

Ok, not such a good start. Spent the night avoiding ever increasing dampness in my dysfunctional tent. Missed breakfast. First days work started 9.00 am whole day shovelling, shovelling scraping and shovelling a bit more. Laboured like a navvy, Schwartzenager - bisceps to follow. Dirt in places I never thought I had. Someone found some post holes, so that made it all worthwhile. Back at 6pm for tent tinkering (mine has been abandoned), dinner and pub. Have moved in with Anne, she claims she doesn't snore. I'll find out tonight.
